What’s the Deal with Dark Pools?

I’ve been hearing a lot about dark pools lately, and I’m curious what you all think about them. I understand they’re places for private trading where big institutions can buy and sell without making a splash in the public markets, but does that really give them an edge? I mean, on one hand, it seems like a smart way to avoid affecting stock prices. On the other hand, it feels a bit shady, like something the little guy should be wary of. Have any of you traded in or followed dark pools? Do you think they impact the market significantly, or are they just another tool in the big players’ toolbox? Would love to hear your thoughts!
