Is investing in a Small Cap Fund worth it?

I've been doing some research on small cap funds and I'm curious about others' experiences with them. I've heard that they can offer great growth potential, but the risk factor also seems pretty high. Has anyone here had success with them or had some lessons learned? How do you usually evaluate whether a small cap fund is worth the investment? Any particular funds you would recommend or stay away from?
